Kalangan Font for Web Design Projects
I was working on a redesign for a boutique online store that sells vintage-inspired home goods. The client wanted something that felt authentic and timeless, yet still modern enough to appeal to a digital audience. That’s when I came across Kalangan—a vintage styled display font with a bold and authentic feel.
The first thing I noticed about Kalangan is how it carries a sense of character. It has the kind of personality that makes you want to pause and read it again. The strokes are thick and confident, and the overall design feels like it could have been pulled from an old book or a retro poster. This made me think immediately of the brand’s identity: classic, elegant, and slightly nostalgic.
I started testing it in the hero section of the homepage. Placing the main headline over a full-width image of a rustic wooden table, I saw how well it stood out against the background. The contrast between the deep, rich tones of the font and the warm wood grain worked beautifully. It didn’t feel too overpowering, but it definitely commanded attention.
Next, I checked how it looked on mobile. On smaller screens, the boldness of Kalangan still held up. It wasn’t too large or too small—it found the right balance between visibility and elegance. I also experimented with using it for call-to-action buttons. While it worked well for headlines, I quickly realized it wasn’t the best choice for short phrases or interactive elements. For those, I paired it with a clean sans serif font to keep the interface friendly and easy to use.
Kalangan is perfect for website headers, landing page titles, and promotional banners. It adds a layer of sophistication without being too formal. I used it for the section headings on the product pages, which helped create a visual hierarchy that guided users through the content naturally. The font’s unique style also made the site feel more cohesive and intentional in its branding.
When it comes to readability, I made sure to test it across different backgrounds. On light-colored sections, it remained legible and sharp. On darker overlays, I adjusted the contrast slightly to maintain clarity. It’s important to remember that while display fonts like Kalangan are great for drawing attention, they shouldn’t compromise the user experience. I kept the body text simple and readable, using a complementary sans serif font for that purpose.
Font pairing became an essential part of the process. I chose a minimalist sans serif typeface for the body copy, which allowed Kalangan to shine in the headers without clashing. This combination gave the site a balanced look—both stylish and functional. It also helped reinforce the brand’s identity as one that values both aesthetics and usability.
I also considered the technical aspects before finalizing the font. Checking the available styles, weights, and file formats, I confirmed that Kalangan had webfont support and multilingual coverage. This was crucial because the store caters to an international audience. Ensuring proper licensing was another priority, especially since the site would be used for client projects and brand assets.
For the blog section of the site, I used Kalangan for the article titles and featured posts. It added a touch of creativity and helped break up the content visually. The font’s vintage charm aligned well with the editorial tone of the blog, making each post feel more personal and engaging.
One thing I learned through this project is that display fonts like Kalangan work best when used sparingly. They’re not meant to be the default for every line of text. Instead, they should be reserved for key areas where impact matters most—like headlines, banners, and logos. Using them consistently across the site helps build a strong brand identity and keeps the design cohesive.
Overall, Kalangan proved to be a valuable asset in creating a polished online brand experience. Its bold and authentic style brought a unique flair to the project, and it performed well across different screen sizes and layouts. If you're looking for a display font that can elevate your web design, Kalangan is definitely worth considering.
